about & the Angels

& the Angels has a playful punk aesthetic;

with a reverence for craft in fashion, our bodies’ adornment and delight in natures forms; the cyclical discarding, rejuvenation and renewal.

via an investigation into the alchemy of a jewellers practice, the limitations in forming precious metals and accenting the engineering; fastenings, hinges and closures become decorative, gem stones are used in raw state and surfaces left scarred by the process.

The story of my making-

I discovered jewellery making 10 years ago. With just a few hours a week I began to learn an ancient craft that gave me a connection to earth with the metals and gems, flow in the freedom to form and fire!I was enchanted and humbled, and lucky to be taught by an angel who’s workshop is managed with equanimity and equal respect for person, idea and community. I still go to Alice’s workshops to work alongside great jewellers and learn from a master goldsmith.

When I decided to make a business from this delightful obsession I set out to situate myself amongst a community of artists and creatives and set up a workshop in a studio cluster with sculptors, ceramicists, painters and photographers. I live in a picturesque city of bookshops and writers. As I deepen my knowledge and broaden my community I feel blessed to be a part of an amorphous and inclusive industry of skilled crafters and creatives willing to share tips and tools.

The making of my stories-

There is no new. There is always what came before. A fresh collection will reference its’ consecutive chapter, maybe include the same character, line, form.

In the early stage of making I am marionettist of miniatures playing until the game pieces on my bench stand as clear sentries in an otherworld light to inspire clusters of satellite works.I call these sun pieces my hero pieces.

Hero’s bare their story of becoming with surface scarring, fire stain, telling. There are hinges, lockets, undoings, parts. They are the source of the stream that flows into work that will be polished: works that will bubble and chatter out into the light.

I currently have pieces available from the collections: eggland, my grandma, thistledown, message buoy and most recent work from a new Autumn/Winter 23 collection called Goldilocks, my porridge period.

Kind Words

“Ro’s jewellery is delicate, bold and unique.

She makes each piece with her client in mind.

The necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets are a joy to wear and feel like a token of love and a work of art, more like wearing a sculpture than a piece of jewellery.”S.S.

“Ro created the most gorgeous ring for my son’s 18th - I had a few vague ideas about what I hoped it would be - she researched & developed the concept & provided beautiful sketches of the perfect design. My son absolutely loved the ring & hasn’t taken off since! The whole process was a joy.” M.R.

“I wanted to get my son a special piece of jewellery that he would want to wear and keep. A difficult brief for a 16 year old…We decided upon a heavier silver chain and a simple bespoke monogram that Rowan designed, which could be attached to the clasp or the chain, or be removed..creating a versatile contemporary piece that he importantly enjoys wearing, and I know will always keep.” C.L.

“I saw Rowan wearing the most beautiful and original necklace that she had made, and when she said she could make me a bespoke version, I immediately said yes. Rowan had used unusual materials with a soft industrial feel that I love; mixing metal tones to create unique pieces that can be additionally customised to make more personal. All through the process Rowan considered every detail, the piece and it’s wearer; from the thickness and type of chain, the clasp fitting, the length and where it would fall to the deign placement.

I now have a beautiful unique piece that I totally love wearing and treasure… “C.L.
